The word "sodium" originates from the Arabic word "sudā" (صودا), which means "headache powder." This term was used to refer to a type of alkali used to relieve headaches. In the 18th century, the word "soda" was coined from "sudā" to describe various alkali substances.
In 1797, the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth isolated the element from the mineral cryolite. He proposed the name "natron" (from the Arabic "natrun" (نطرون), meaning "natural soda"), but the name "sodium" was later adopted instead.
