saltpetre etymology

Etymology:

  • Middle English: saltpetre
  • Old French: salpetre, salpetre
  • Medieval Latin: sal petrae ("salt of the rock")
  • From Latin: sal ("salt") + petra ("rock")

Meaning:

Saltpetre is a common name for potassium nitrate (KNO3), a white crystalline inorganic salt that is water-soluble.

Origin:

Saltpetre was originally obtained by extracting it from natural sources, such as:

  • Cave walls and ceilings where bat guano had accumulated
  • The soil beneath stables and livestock pens
  • Walls of damp cellars and outhouses

These locations contained high concentrations of nitrogen compounds from decomposing organic matter. Bacteria would convert these compounds into nitrates, which were then leached by water and deposited on the walls or in the soil.

The saltpetre was extracted by dissolving it in water and then evaporating the water to leave behind the crystalline salt.

In the 18th century, methods were developed to produce saltpetre artificially, using a process called "niter beds." These beds were large compost piles made from animal manure, vegetable matter, and limestone. The bacteria in the compost would convert nitrogen compounds into nitrates, which were then leached out by water and collected.

Today, saltpetre is primarily produced synthetically for use in a variety of applications, including:

  • Fertilizers
  • Explosives
  • Pyrotechnics
  • Food preservation
  • Medicine
