Etymology
The name "Romania" is derived from the Latin word "Romanus", which means "Roman".
Meaning and Origin
The term "Romanus" was originally used to refer to the citizens of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, continued to exist. The people of the Byzantine Empire considered themselves to be the direct descendants of the Roman Empire and therefore referred to themselves as "Romans".
Over time, the term "Romanus" became synonymous with the people who lived in the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire, which included much of present-day Romania. In the 13th century, the name "Romania" was first used to refer to the territory that is now Romania.
The name "Romania" was officially adopted as the name of the country in 1862, when the Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia united to form the United Principalities of Romania. In 1881, Romania gained full independence and became a kingdom.
