Meaning

Origin

The term "periodontics" was first used in 1918 by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). The AAP was founded in 1914 and was originally known as the American Society of Dental Prosthesis and Exodontia. In 1918, the society changed its name to the American Academy of Periodontology to better reflect its focus on the treatment of periodontal diseases.
