Origin
Osteopathy was founded by Andrew Taylor Still in the late 19th century. Still was a frontier doctor in the American Midwest who rejected the prevailing medical practices of his time, such as bloodletting and mercury poisoning. He believed that the body had an innate ability to heal itself and that osteopathic treatment could help facilitate this healing process.
Still's ideas were controversial at first, but osteopathy gradually gained acceptance and recognition. Today, osteopathy is a licensed healthcare profession in many countries and is practiced by osteopathic physicians (DOs), who receive comprehensive medical training similar to medical doctors (MDs).
