The first motorcycle was invented by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1885. It was a single-cylinder, four-stroke engine mounted on a wooden frame with two wheels. The engine displaced 264 cc and produced 0.5 horsepower. The motorcycle had a top speed of 10 mph (16 km/h).
The first motorcycle to be commercially successful was the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, which was manufactured in Germany from 1894 to 1902. It was a two-cylinder, four-stroke engine mounted on a steel frame with two wheels. The engine displaced 1,489 cc and produced 2.5 horsepower. The motorcycle had a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h).
Motorcycles quickly became popular for both recreation and transportation. By the early 20th century, there were numerous motorcycle manufacturers in the United States and Europe. Motorcycles were used in both World War I and World War II for military purposes.
