Etymology
The word "metatarsal" comes from the Greek words "meta" ( μετά ), meaning "after" or "beyond", and "tarsos" ( ταρσός ), meaning "foot".
Meaning
A metatarsal is a long bone in the foot that connects the ankle to the toes. There are five metatarsals in each foot, numbered I through V from the inside to the outside.
Origin
The metatarsals develop from cartilage models that form during the embryonic stage of development. These cartilage models gradually ossify, or turn into bone, during childhood and adolescence. The metatarsals typically reach their full size and shape by the age of 18-20.
The metatarsals play an important role in the structure and function of the foot. They provide support for the arch of the foot and help to distribute weight evenly across the foot. The metatarsals also allow for a wide range of movement, including walking, running, and jumping.
