Origin

The term "metabolism" was first used in the 17th century by the English physician Francis Glisson. He used it to describe the process by which food is converted into blood. In the 19th century, the German physiologist Theodor Schwann expanded the definition of metabolism to include all chemical reactions that occur within a living organism.
