The term "Macedonia" is derived from the ancient Greek word "Μακεδονία" (Makedonía), which was first mentioned by Thucydides in the 5th century BC.

Meaning

The original meaning of "Makedonía" is uncertain. Several theories have been proposed:

• "Mountain land": Some scholars suggest that it comes from the Greek word "μακρόν" (makrón), meaning "long," and "όρος" (óros), meaning "mountain." This would refer to the mountainous terrain of the region.
• "Tall people": Others believe it derives from the Greek word "μακρός" (makrós), meaning "tall," in reference to the stature of the ancient Macedonians.

Origin

The ancient Macedonians were a group of Greek-speaking tribes that inhabited the region of Macedonia, which is located in the northern part of present-day Greece. The exact origin of the Macedonians is debated, but they are believed to have been descended from a mix of Greek and Illyrian populations.

The first known kingdom of Macedonia was established in the 7th century BC by the Argead dynasty. Under King Philip II (359-336 BC), Macedonia became a major power in the Greek world and conquered most of the other Greek city-states. Philip's son, Alexander the Great, went on to conquer a vast empire that stretched from Greece to India.

After Alexander's death in 323 BC, Macedonia was divided into several smaller kingdoms. The region was eventually conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century BC and became a province of the Roman Empire.

The term "Macedonia" has been used throughout history to refer to different regions of the Balkans. In the 19th century, the region of Macedonia was divided between Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. The modern-day Republic of North Macedonia was formed in 1991 after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
