Indonesia etymology

Etymology:

The name "Indonesia" is derived from two Greek words:

  • Indos: meaning "India" or "East"
  • nesos: meaning "island"

Meaning:

Therefore, "Indonesia" literally means "Indian Islands" or "Islands of the East."

Origin:

The term "Indonesia" was first coined by the German geographer Adolf Bastian in 1845. He proposed the name as a replacement for the Dutch East Indies, which had been used to refer to the Dutch colonial possessions in the region. Bastian believed that the term "Indonesia" better reflected the cultural and geographical unity of the archipelago.

The name "Indonesia" gained popularity among Indonesian nationalists in the early 20th century. It was officially adopted as the name of the independent nation when it was proclaimed on August 17, 1945.
