Etymology

The term "email" is an abbreviation of "electronic mail." It was coined in the early 1970s by American computer scientist Ray Tomlinson, who developed the first email system.

Meaning

Email is a system for sending and receiving messages electronically over computer networks. It is a convenient and cost-effective way to communicate with individuals and groups.

Origin

The concept of email originated in the 1960s with the development of time-sharing computer systems. Users could create and store files on these shared systems and send messages to other users through a central messaging system.

In 1971, Ray Tomlinson developed ARPANET, a wide-area network that allowed computers to communicate with each other. He added a feature to ARPANET that allowed users to send messages to each other over the network. This feature became known as email.

Tomlinson also developed the "@” symbol to separate the user's name from the domain name in email addresses. The @ symbol was chosen because it is used in mathematics to indicate a "rate." In the context of email, the @ symbol indicates the rate at which messages are sent and received.

The first email message was sent on October 26, 1971, from Tomlinson's computer at Bolt, Beranek, and Newman (BBN) to a computer at Stanford University. The message simply said, "TEST."
