Origin

• Pre-Roman Period: The area where Dijon is now located was first settled by the Gaulish tribe known as the Lingones. They established a fortified town named "Divio" around the 3rd century BC.
• Roman Period: The Romans conquered the area in 58 BC and renamed the town "Dibio." It became an important Roman settlement on the Roman road connecting Lyon to Trier.
• Middle Ages: After the fall of the Roman Empire, Dijon became part of the Duchy of Burgundy. In the 10th century, the town became the residence of the Dukes of Burgundy.
