The term "Cisalpine" originated in ancient Rome during the Roman Republic. It referred to the region of northern Italy that lay south of the Alps and north of the Rubicon River. This area was known as "Gallia Cisalpina" (Cisalpine Gaul) and was inhabited by Celtic tribes known as the Gallic Senones, Insubres, and Boii.
In the 1st century BC, Julius Caesar conquered Cisalpine Gaul and granted its inhabitants Roman citizenship. The region became known as "Cisalpine Gaul" or simply "Cisalpine." It was part of the Roman province of "Gallia Transpadana" (Transpadane Gaul) and later became a separate province in its own right.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the term "Cisalpine" gradually fell out of use. In the Middle Ages, the region became known as Lombardy, after the Germanic people who invaded and settled there.
Today, the term "Cisalpine" is occasionally used to refer to the northern Italian regions of Lombardy, Piedmont, and Emilia-Romagna, which were once part of ancient Cisalpine Gaul.
