Amaretto etymology

Etymology of "Amaretto":

The word "amaretto" is derived from the Italian word "amaro," meaning "bitter."

Meaning of "Amaretto":

Amaretto is a sweet Italian liqueur flavored with bitter almonds. It is typically brown in color and has a rich, nutty flavor.

Origin of Amaretto:

The exact origin of amaretto is unclear, but there are two main theories:

  • Saronno, Italy Theory: According to this theory, amaretto was invented in 1525 by a painter named Bernardino Luini. Luini was working on a fresco in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Saronno, Italy, when he was gifted with a bag of bitter almonds. He used these almonds to create a sweet liqueur for his employer, the Duke of Milan.
  • Veneto, Italy Theory: This theory claims that amaretto originated in the Veneto region of Italy. In the 18th century, a group of distillers began experimenting with bitter almonds and created a liqueur that they called "amaro mandorla." This liqueur eventually evolved into what we now know as amaretto.

Today, amaretto is produced throughout Italy, but the town of Saronno is still considered the birthplace of the liqueur.
