Meaning
Volleyball is a team sport where two teams of six players are separated by a net. The objective of the game is to score points by grounding the ball in the opposing team's court while preventing the opposing team from doing the same.
Origin
Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Morgan was a physical education instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). He wanted to create a game that was less strenuous than basketball but still provided a good workout.
Morgan initially called the game "mintonette," but it was later renamed "volleyball" by Alfred S. Halstead, a YMCA physical director, because the game involved volleying a ball over a net. The first official volleyball game was played on July 9, 1896, at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Volleyball quickly gained popularity in the United States and around the world. It was included in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1964, and it is now one of the most popular team sports in the world.
