Etymology
The word "stethoscope" originates from three Greek roots:
Meaning
A stethoscope is a medical instrument used to auscultate (listen to) sounds produced by the heart, lungs, and other organs.
Origin
The stethoscope was invented by the French physician René Laennec in 1816. Laennec was examining a female patient who was too stout for him to place his ear directly on her chest. He rolled up a sheet of paper and placed one end on her chest and the other end to his ear. He was surprised to find that he could hear the patient's heart sounds better than he could with his ear alone.
Laennec continued to refine his invention, and in 1819, he published a paper describing his findings. The stethoscope quickly became an essential diagnostic tool for physicians.
Modern Stethoscopes
Modern stethoscopes have two earpieces and a chestpiece that contains a diaphragm on one side and a bell on the other. The diaphragm is used to listen to high-pitched sounds, such as heart murmurs, while the bell is used to listen to low-pitched sounds, such as lung crackles.
Stethoscopes are also used to measure blood pressure and to detect other medical conditions, such as asthma and pneumonia.
