Origin:
The name Staphylococcus was first coined by the German bacteriologist Alexander Ogston in 1880. He observed the distinctive grape-like arrangement of the bacteria in pus from surgical wounds.
The term "coccaceae" (the family to which staphylococcus belongs) was introduced later by Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli in 1857. It refers to the spherical or oval shape of these bacteria.
