Sericulture is a term derived from two Latin words:
Meaning
Sericulture refers to the practice of breeding and raising silkworms (larvae of the Bombyx mori moth) for the production of raw silk.
Origin
The practice of sericulture is believed to have originated in ancient China around 2700 BCE. Legend has it that the Empress Leizu, wife of Emperor Huang Di, discovered the process of silk production while observing a silkworm cocoon.
From China, sericulture eventually spread to other parts of Asia, including Korea, Japan, and India. It was later introduced to Europe in the 6th century CE by Byzantine monks who smuggled silkworm eggs and mulberry leaves into the Eastern Roman Empire.
Sericulture became an important industry in Europe, especially in Italy and France, and later in North America. Today, China remains the largest producer of raw silk, followed by India, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
