Etymology
The name "September" comes from the Latin word "Septem", meaning "seven". This is because September was originally the seventh month of the Roman calendar.
Meaning
September is the ninth month of the year according to the modern Gregorian calendar. It is considered a transitional month, marking the end of summer and the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
Origin
The Roman calendar, from which September originated, was established by Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome. The calendar initially had ten months, with September being the seventh month. Later, January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth month.
Over time, the Roman calendar underwent several reforms. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which included an extra day in February every four years (leap year). This resulted in September becoming the eighth month of the year.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar, which is still in use today. This calendar eliminated the Julian calendar's leap year exception for centuries divisible by 100 but not by 400. This change restored September to being the ninth month of the year.
