Origin:
The QWERTY keyboard layout was developed in the 1870s by Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel Soule. It was specifically designed to slow down typing so that the mechanical typewriters of the time could keep up with the speed at which the keys were being pressed. By separating commonly used letter pairs and placing them far apart on the keyboard, the typist would have to slow down to avoid jamming the keys.
Over time, the QWERTY layout became standardized, and despite its inefficient design, it remains the most widely used keyboard layout in the world today.
