Etymology
The name "Pomeranian" comes from the historical region of Pomerania, located in northern Central Europe along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea.
Meaning
The name is derived from the Slavic word "Pomorjane", which means "people of the seashore". This is fitting, as the region of Pomerania is home to a long coastline.
Origin
The Pomeranian breed originated in the Pomeranian region of what is now Poland and Germany. It is thought to have descended from Spitz-type dogs that were common in the area.
The Spitz-type dogs were bred to hunt small game and protect flocks from predators. Over time, they were selectively bred to become smaller and more companionable, resulting in the Pomeranian breed we know today.
