Meaning and Origin
A polymerase is an enzyme that catalyzes the polymerization of nucleotides to synthesize a new nucleic acid molecule (DNA or RNA) using a template strand. In other words, it joins together multiple nucleotide subunits to form a long, chain-like molecule.
The term "polymerase" was first coined in 1959 by American biochemist Arthur Kornberg, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1959 for his work on the synthesis of DNA in vitro. Kornberg and his team discovered and purified a protein from E. coli that they named DNA polymerase, which was able to use a DNA template to synthesize a complementary DNA strand.
