Gorgonzola cheese is believed to have been created in the 9th century by accident. According to legend, a cheesemaker in Gorgonzola left a pot of milk out overnight. When he returned in the morning, he found that the milk had formed a blue-veined cheese.
The cheese quickly became popular and was soon being exported to other parts of Italy and Europe. Today, Gorgonzola cheese is still produced in the town of Gorgonzola, as well as in other parts of Northern Italy.
