A Dixiecrat is a Southern Democrat who supports the segregation of African Americans and opposes the federal government's efforts to promote racial equality.
Origin:
The Dixiecrat movement emerged in 1948 as a reaction to President Harry Truman's executive order desegregating the military. Southern Democrats, led by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, opposed this order and formed the States' Rights Democratic Party, also known as the "Dixiecrat Party."
The Dixiecrats nominated Thurmond for President in the 1948 election. They ran on a platform of "Southern independence" and promised to fight against "federal tyranny." Thurmond received 39 electoral votes from four Southern states: Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Louisiana.
The Dixiecrat movement declined in the 1960s as the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum. By the 1970s, most Dixiecrats had rejoined the Democratic Party.
