apperceive etymology

Etymology

  • Latin: appercipere, meaning "to perceive, apprehend, or understand"
  • ad- (to, towards) + percipere (to perceive)

Meaning

  • To become consciously aware of
  • To comprehend or understand

Origin

The term "apperceive" was first used in the 18th century by the Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid. Reid argued that the mind has the ability to perceive both external objects and its own internal states. He used the term "apperception" to refer to the process by which the mind becomes consciously aware of its own thoughts and feelings.

The term was later adopted by other philosophers, including Immanuel Kant. Kant argued that apperception is the fundamental principle of all knowledge. He believed that the mind cannot know anything unless it is first conscious of itself.

Usage

The term "apperceive" is often used in psychology and philosophy to refer to the process of becoming consciously aware of something. It can also be used to refer to the ability to comprehend or understand something.

For example, we might say that someone apperceives their own hunger when they become consciously aware of the need to eat. Or, we might say that someone apperceives the meaning of a poem when they understand its significance.
