AIDS etymology

Etymology:

AIDS is an acronym for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Meaning:

AIDS is a life-threatening condition that affects the body's immune system. It is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV attacks and destroys white blood cells, which are essential for the body's ability to fight infections. As the immune system weakens, the body becomes more susceptible to a wide range of opportunistic infections and cancers.

Origin:

The term "acquired immunodeficiency syndrome" was first used in 1981 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to describe a new disease that was affecting gay men in Los Angeles and New York City. The disease was initially known as Gay-Related Immune Deficiency (GRID), but the name was later changed to AIDS to reflect the fact that the disease could affect anyone, regardless of sexual orientation.
