Sinhalese etymology

Etymology:

  • Sanskrit: "Simhala"
  • Pali: "Siṃhala"
  • Prakrit: "Siṃhala"

Meaning:

  • "Land of the Lion" or "Lion's Land"

Origin:

The term "Sinhalese" is believed to have originated in the 5th century BCE, when a group of Indo-Aryan people from Northern India migrated to the island of Lanka (now Sri Lanka). They settled in the North-Central region and established a kingdom called "Simhala."

According to legend, the name "Simhala" was given by the followers of Prince Vijaya, the leader of the Indian settlers. As they sailed towards the island, they saw a fierce lion on the shore. Believing it to be a symbol of strength and courage, they adopted the name "Simhala" for their new homeland.

Over time, the term "Simhala" evolved into "Sinhalese" and became the name for the people, language, and culture that developed on the island.
